Overview

This unit is about reading a set of drawings and specifications and doing the maths that turns them into a materials order — the areas, volumes, framing quantities, sheet layouts and lineal lengths a carpentry job actually needs, all recorded so they can be costed and ordered. Get the calculations right and the job runs to budget with minimal waste; get them wrong and you're short on delivery day, over-ordering, or explaining a blowout at the next toolbox talk.

Element 1

Plan and prepare

Before you punch a single number into the calculator:

Review the whole document set — plans, elevations, sections and details, the written specification, and any workplace requirements such as company take-off sheets or ordering procedures.
Confirm you have the current revision. Working off a superseded drawing is the classic way to quantify the wrong building.
Read the specification for materials, grades and sizes. Where the spec and the drawing disagree, the spec usually governs — query it, don't guess.
Plan the work to comply with laws and regulations, the National Construction Code (NCC), the relevant Australian Standards, WHS and environmental requirements, manufacturers' specifications and the project drawings and specification. Compliance shapes the numbers — stud spacings, member sizes and fixing centres aren't yours to invent.
Pull the manufacturer's literature for anything sheeted or profiled: sheet sizes, effective cover widths and lap requirements come from the manufacturer, not from memory.
Set up your kit: scale rule, calculator, tape or laser measure, pencil and a take-off sheet so every figure gets written down once, in order.

Element 2

Calculate area and volume of materials

Get dimensions from the drawings and spec for each type of material on the job. Use written (figured) dimensions first; scale off the drawing only when no written figure exists.
Lining materials (plasterboard, panelling): calculate the area of each type separately. Wall lining, ceiling lining and wet-area board are separate line items — they're different products at different prices.
Building wrap and external cladding: work out the wall area elevation by elevation, then total the lot for the wrap and for each cladding type. Gable ends are triangles — half base × height.
Roofing: calculate the true surface area of each roofing material — measured along the slope (the rake), never off the flat plan view. A pitched roof is always bigger than the footprint it covers.
Volume materials (concrete for pads, piers and slabs — anything ordered in cubic metres): length × width × depth, all in metres, gives m³. For round piers, it's the area of the circle × depth.
Deduct large openings (garage doors, big window banks) where it makes sense; small openings are often left in as your cutting allowance. Follow the workplace practice and be consistent.

Worked example

A wall 3 600 mm long and 2 400 mm high: convert first — 3.6 m × 2.4 m = 8.64 m². Deduct a 1.8 m × 1.2 m window (2.16 m²) and you need 6.48 m² of cladding for that face.

Element 3

Calculate the material requirements

Wall and roof framing: count plates, studs, noggings and lintels; rafters or trusses, battens, hips and ridges — as lengths and quantities, then convert to the stock lengths suppliers sell.
Stud counts: wall length ÷ stud spacing, plus one to close the run, plus extras at openings, corners and junctions. Round up — you can't order 0.4 of a stud.
Sheet flooring and lining: work out the sheet size and number needed, sketching the layout first so you land on the most economical arrangement — fewest sheets, fewest cuts, offcuts big enough to reuse.
Linear (strip) flooring and lining: total the lineal metres and plan board runs against available stock lengths so short offcuts don't pile up.
Sheet cladding: same economics, elevation by elevation — dimensions and quantity of sheets from the layout that wastes the least.
Linear cladding (weatherboards and the like): total lineal metres using the board's effective cover — its face width minus the lap — never its full width.
Roofing sheets and units: dimensions and quantity must allow for overlaps — side laps and end laps. Divide the roof width by the sheet's effective cover width, round up to whole sheets, and check end laps if sheets run in more than one length.

Rule of thumb

Most economical layout means you sketched it before you ordered it. Two minutes with a pencil showing how sheets fall on the frame saves whole sheets — and shows the assessor you thought about waste, not just arithmetic.

Element 4

Check and record results

Write your workings down — every measurement, formula and step, in order on the take-off sheet — so another carpenter (or you, next week) can follow and verify them.
Review before anyone orders: re-run the numbers, check every unit conversion, and do a rough mental estimate — "roughly 9 by 5 is about 45, so 46.8 m² sounds right." Sanity checks catch fat-finger errors that a calculator never will.
Record the results in the form the job needs for costing and ordering: material, size and grade, quantity, and the unit the supplier uses — lineal metres, m², m³, sheets or each.
Convert to what's actually sold: stock lengths, standard sheet sizes, packs — and include the agreed waste allowance before the order goes in.

Your measuring and calculating kit — uses and limits

Tape measure: everyday lengths; check the hook isn't bent and the blade isn't kinked — a damaged tape reads wrong every time.
Four-fold rule: short, accurate measurements; awkward beyond a metre or so.
Laser distance measurer: fast for long internal runs; needs a solid target and struggles in bright sun outdoors.
Scale rule: reads scaled drawings directly at 1:100, 1:50, 1:20 and so on; useless if the print isn't true to scale.
Calculator: fast, but only as good as the numbers and units you feed it. Estimate the answer first so a mis-keyed digit stands out.

Remember: π ≈ 3.14 (use 3.142 for finer work), and the radius is half the diameter — a 450 mm auger hole has a radius of 0.225 m.

Converting between millimetres and metres

mm → m ÷ 10003 600 mm = 3.6 m

m → mm × 10002.4 m = 2 400 mm

Drawings are dimensioned in millimetres; areas and volumes are calculated in metres. Convert everything to one unit before you calculate — never mix them in the same sum.

Scaling dimensions from drawings

Know the common scales: 1:100 site and floor plans, 1:50 sections and elevations, 1:20 or 1:10 details. At 1:100, 1 mm on paper is 100 mm built.
A scale rule reads the real dimension directly — pick the edge that matches the drawing's stated scale.
Written dimensions always beat scaled ones. Scale only when there's no figure, and respect any "DO NOT SCALE" note.
Prints get resized. Before trusting any scaled measurement, verify the sheet against a known written dimension.

Learn from others

Where people slip up

Reading roof area off the floor plan.Fix: the plan shows the flat footprint, but the roof runs on a slope. Measure the true rake length from the section, or divide the plan dimension by the cosine of the pitch.

Mixing millimetres and metres in one calculation.Fix: 3600 × 2.4 gives you nonsense. Convert everything to metres (or everything to millimetres) before you start.

Ignoring laps and effective cover.Fix: a corrugated sheet about 840 mm wide only covers about 760 mm once lapped. Divide by the manufacturer's effective cover width, not the sheet width — then round up.

Ordering the exact calculated quantity.Fix: zero allowance means one bad cut leaves you short. Add the waste allowance your spec or workplace requires, and round to stock lengths and whole sheets.

Scaling off a resized or superseded print.Fix: use written dimensions first; if you must scale, check the sheet against a known dimension and confirm it's the current revision.

Take-off: The process (and the sheet) of measuring quantities from drawings and specs to work out materials needed.
Specification (spec): The written document setting out materials, grades, standards and workmanship — read alongside the drawings, and usually governing when they conflict.
Lining: Internal sheet material fixed to walls and ceilings — plasterboard is the everyday example.
Cladding: The external skin of the building — weatherboards, fibre-cement sheet, metal panels.
Building wrap: The flexible membrane fixed over the frame behind the cladding, measured by total wall area.
Lineal (linear) metre: A quantity measured by length only — boards, battens, skirting — regardless of width.
Effective cover: The width a board or sheet actually covers once its lap or overlap is taken up — always less than its full width.
Lap: The overlap between adjoining sheets or boards — side laps along edges, end laps where lengths join.
Stud, plate, nogging: Wall framing members: vertical studs between horizontal top and bottom plates, with noggings blocking between studs.
Pitch: The slope angle of a roof, in degrees or as rise over run.
Rake: The sloping length of a roof surface from eave to ridge — the length you measure roofing along.
Stock length: The standard lengths timber is sold in (typically 300 mm increments) — what your calculated lengths must round up to.
Scale rule: A rule marked in common drawing scales so real dimensions can be read straight off a scaled drawing.
Elevation: A drawing showing one exterior face of the building straight-on — where you measure wall areas for wrap and cladding.
