Overview

What this unit is about

This unit is about pulling the information you need for carpentry work out of a project's plans, specifications and drawings — and making sure that information is current, consistent, and matches what is actually on site. Get it right and you set out, order and build once; get it wrong and you are pulling work apart, wasting material and holding up everyone behind you.

Element 1

Plan and prepare — get the right documents in your hands

Know where the documents live. Plans, specifications and drawings may be in the site office plan rack, held by the supervisor or builder, or on the head contractor's document system. Know how to locate and access the full set for your job before you start.
Know what a full set looks like. Typically a site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, construction details, the written specification and any schedules — you often need several of these together to answer one question.
Verify currency before you rely on anything. Check the revision letter or number and the date in the title block, and compare against the drawing register or the latest issued set. Look for amendment clouds and "superseded" stamps.
If two copies of the "same" drawing disagree, stop. Confirm with the supervisor or builder which is the current issue before you measure, order or cut anything.
Why it matters: building from a superseded drawing is one of the most expensive mistakes on a site. Verifying currency takes minutes; demolishing and rebuilding takes days.

Element 2

Interpret construction plans, drawings and their features

Find the key features first: the title block (project name, drawing number, scale, revision, date), the north point, the scale, grid lines, and which view you are looking at — plan, elevation, section or detail.
Read the legend, don't assume. The legend decodes hatching for materials (brickwork, concrete, timber), line types (hidden lines, centre lines, boundaries) and symbols for doors, windows and fixtures. Symbols can vary between drawing sets — check the legend for this set.
Learn the common abbreviations (table below) so notes on the drawing read at a glance.
Check drawing dimensions against the site. Before setting out or cutting, physically measure the critical dimensions on site and confirm they match the documents. Existing structures rarely match the drawings exactly.
Check the drawings against the specification. Materials, member sizes, treatments and finishes should agree across drawings and the spec. Where they don't, record the inconsistency and report it — never guess which document wins.
Use figured (written) dimensions, never scale off the sheet. Prints and photocopies distort, and many details are marked NTS (not to scale). If a dimension you need isn't written, ask for it.

Element 3

Locate key features on the site plan

Orient the drawing to the site. Use the north point, the boundaries, the road frontage and existing buildings or features to turn the plan the same way as the ground in front of you. Everything you read after that depends on this step.
Locate the services: water, sewer, stormwater, electricity, gas and telecommunications. Know where they run before anything is excavated or fixed near them — service locations are confirmed on site before you break ground.
Identify the main features: the building envelope and setbacks, easements, existing structures, trees to be retained, access points, and where site facilities sit.
Read the contours. Contour lines join points of equal height. Lines close together mean steep ground; far apart means flat. Contours tell you about cut and fill, drainage falls and how the building sits in the land.
Find the datum. The datum (benchmark) is the fixed reference point on or near the site that every level on the job — floor levels, footing depths, heights — is measured from as an RL. Know where it is and protect it.

Element 4

Determine project requirements and plan the project

Work the documents together. Review drawings, plans and the specification side by side to pull out the construction details and dimensions for your part of the job — the drawings give shape and size; the specification gives quality.
Ancillary works count too. Decks, stairs, ramps, fences, pergolas, retaining structures and hoardings — determine their location, their dimensions, and the tolerances they must be built within.
Identify environmental controls and where they sit: sediment fences, stormwater inlet protection, tree protection zones, dust and noise controls, and designated waste or wash-out areas. They appear on the site plan and in the spec, and they must stay in place.
Extract the quality requirements from the specification: the materials to use, the standard of work expected, the finishes and treatments required, and the tolerances your work will be checked against.
Build your work plan. Take off the material quantities from the drawings, list the material requirements, then set down the processes and sequence of work — including any hold points, inspections or nominated subcontractors you'll need to work around.

What your assessor will look for

You'll read and interpret the documents for two carpentry projects, each at least 30 m², each involving at least seven materials — and prepare a work plan for each that identifies the dimensions, the material requirements and the processes to be followed.

Site plan — the whole block from above: boundaries, building position, services, contours, datum, access.
Floor plan — the layout cut horizontally through the building: rooms, openings, set-out dimensions.
Elevations — each external face: heights, external finishes, window and door positions.
Sections and cross-sectional plans — vertical cuts through the construction showing how it goes together, floor to roof.
Structural details — large-scale illustrations with dimensions for junctions, connections and structural members.
Dimensions, notes and illustrations — the figured measurements and written callouts on every sheet; read them before anything else.
Specification — the written quality document: materials and quality of work, quality assurance requirements, nominated subcontractors, and provision of site access and facilities.
Supplementary specifications — additions or changes issued after the main spec; they can override it, so check them.
Work schedules — what happens when, plus schedules of finishes, fixtures or components that list exactly what goes where.

Performance details you must be able to extract

Characteristics of the products specified — how a material behaves and what it can do.
Material types — species, grade, treatment level, sheet type, fixings.
Standards of work — the workmanship level the job will be checked against.
Tolerances — how much variation from the stated dimension or level is acceptable.
Treatments and finishes — coatings, preservative treatments, surface finishes and where each applies.

Planning and scheduling from the documents — the process

Verify currency → interpret the documents → check them against the site and against each other → resolve or report inconsistencies → take off materials → sequence the processes → write the work plan.

Watch out

Where people slip up

Scaling dimensions off the drawing with a rule.

Fix: always use the figured (written) dimensions. Prints distort and many details are marked NTS. If the dimension you need isn't written, ask for it — don't measure the paper.

Building from an old revision because "it was the copy on the bench".

Fix: check the revision and date in the title block against the drawing register or latest issue every time you pick up a sheet. Treat unmarked copies as suspect.

The spec says one material, the drawing says another — so you pick one and keep going.

Fix: never guess which document wins. Record the inconsistency and report it to the supervisor or builder, and get the answer confirmed before you order or build.

Reading the site plan without orienting it — or treating the datum as "ground level".

Fix: orient the plan with the north point and boundaries before locating anything. The datum is a fixed benchmark that RLs are measured from — it is usually not the ground level where you're standing.

Assuming a symbol means what it meant on the last job.

Fix: symbols and hatching vary between drawing sets. Check the legend on the set in front of you.

Datum: The fixed reference point (benchmark) on or near the site from which all levels on the job are measured.
Reduced level (RL): A height expressed relative to the datum — used for floor levels, footings and contours.
Contour line: A line on the site plan joining points of equal height; spacing shows how steep the ground is.
Elevation: A drawing of one external face of a building, showing heights and finishes.
Section: A drawing of a vertical cut through the building showing internal construction.
Detail: A large-scale drawing of one junction or component, with its own dimensions and notes.
Specification: The written document describing materials, quality of work, quality assurance, nominated subcontractors and site access and facilities.
Legend: The key on a drawing set that decodes its symbols, hatching and line types.
Title block: The panel (usually bottom-right) carrying the drawing number, scale, revision and date — your first stop on any sheet.
Revision: The letter or number identifying which issue of a drawing you hold; only the latest revision is current.
Scale: The ratio between the drawing and real life, e.g. 1:100 — one unit on paper equals 100 on site.
Tolerance: The permitted variation from a stated dimension, level or alignment.
Ancillary works: Works attached to or around the main build — decks, stairs, ramps, fences, pergolas, retaining, hoardings.
Work schedule: A document setting out the sequence and timing of work, or listing finishes and fixtures item by item.
Take-off: Measuring quantities of materials from the drawings so they can be listed and ordered.
