What this unit is about

This unit is about safely selecting, checking, using and maintaining the hand, power and pneumatic tools a carpenter relies on every day — from tape measures and chisels through to circular saws, routers and nail guns. Get it right and you work faster, cut cleaner and keep yourself and everyone around you safe; get it wrong and you're the subject of the next toolbox talk.

1Plan and prepare

Nothing gets plugged in until the planning is done. Before you pick up a tool:

Read the work instructions first. Know exactly what the task is, which tools and equipment it calls for, and what quality standard the finished work is held to — then work to it.
Plan the job to comply with everything that applies: WHS laws and regulations, the National Construction Code, relevant Australian Standards, environmental requirements, each tool's manufacturer's specifications, and your workplace's own procedures. If a SWMS or safe work procedure covers the task, read it and follow it.
Choose PPE for each part of the task — it changes as the task changes. Eye and hearing protection at the drop saw; dust protection when cutting or sanding sheet products; and know when gloves come off, such as near rotating blades where they can drag your hand in.
Inspect the work area before you start. Locate services — power, water, gas, above and below — and identify hazards such as leads across walkways, poor light, unstable stacks and other trades working nearby.
Put risk controls in place before work begins, including signage and barricades where a cutting station, flying offcuts or trailing leads could put other people at risk.

Rule of thumb: if you can't say what the hazard is and what the control is, you're not ready to start.

2Select, check and use tools and equipment

Match the tool to the task — and know each tool's function, how it operates, and its limits. Using a tool outside what it's designed for is where accidents and wrecked work come from.
Check serviceability before every use: handles tight and undamaged, blades sharp and free of cracks, guards fitted and returning freely, leads free of cuts and exposed wires with a current test tag, air hoses and fittings sound.
A faulty tool never gets "one more cut". Take it out of service, tag it, and report the fault following your workplace procedure.
Use every tool the way the manufacturer and WHS requirements say: the right blade or bit for the material, RCD protection on mains power, both hands where the tool is designed for it, let blades stop before putting the tool down, and stay planted — good footing, work secured with clamps, never over-reaching.
Isolate before you adjust. Changing a blade, cutter or disc in a power saw, powered planer, router or grinder always starts the same way: battery out, plug out, or air hose disconnected.
Pneumatic gear: check the compressor, hoses and fittings, run the correct operating pressure, and treat a nail gun like it's always loaded — never bypass the safety contact tip, never point it at anyone.
Sharpen and maintain your tools — a sharp chisel and a tuned plane are safer and cut cleaner. Grinding, sharpening and honing plane blades and chisels is part of this unit, not an optional extra.

Keep the steel cool while grinding. If the edge turns blue, the temper is gone and it won't hold an edge — grind past the blued steel and start again. Test the finished edge on scrap timber, never on your thumb.

3Clean up

Clean as you go, and properly at the end — cleanup has to meet the same legislative and workplace requirements as the work itself.
Sort and dispose of waste by the site's rules: offcuts, sawdust and packaging go where the workplace says. Treated timber offcuts and dust need special handling — never burn treated timber and don't leave its dust lying around.
Handle materials safely when stacking, moving and storing — lift well, get help or gear for heavy loads, and leave stacks stable.
Check and maintain tools before they go away: clean off dust and resin, lightly protect bare steel, touch up edges. Maintenance at pack-up means the tool is ready next time.
Store and secure everything — tools in their boxes and cases, batteries and chargers stored safely, gear locked away so the site is secure.
Report any faults you find at pack-up so the tool is repaired before anyone reaches for it again.

The full process to grind, sharpen and hone a plane blade and a chisel — grind the primary bevel at about 25° on the bench grinder keeping the steel cool, sharpen on a coarse stone, hone a micro-bevel at about 30° on a fine stone, then flatten the back to remove the burr.

!Where people slip up

"It's only a quick cut — I don't need the PPE or the guard."

The fix: the quick jobs are where most injuries happen, because that's when people skip the setup. PPE on, guards working, every cut — no exceptions for "just one".

Changing a blade, disc or cutter with the tool still connected to power or air.

The fix: isolate first, every time — battery out, plug out, hose off. A saw that starts mid-blade-change doesn't give you a second chance.

Pushing on with a blunt chisel or plane and just leaning harder.

The fix: blunt tools need more force, and more force means less control and more slips. Sharpening is routine maintenance, not a last resort — a sharp edge is the safer edge.

Skipping the pre-use check because "it worked fine yesterday".

The fix: leads fray, guards jam, tags expire and hoses split between uses. Check serviceability every time, and tag out and report anything that fails — don't quietly put it back in the shared box.

Grinding an edge until the steel turns blue, then wondering why it won't stay sharp.

The fix: blue means the temper is gone — the steel is now too soft to hold an edge. Light passes on the grinder, dip the blade in water often, and if it blues, grind past the damage and start again.

Serviceability: a tool's fitness for safe use right now — checked before every use, not assumed.
PPE: personal protective equipment — eye, hearing, dust and hand protection, selected to suit each part of the task.
RCD: residual current device — cuts power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth; a portable RCD gives you that protection wherever fixed protection isn't guaranteed.
SWMS: safe work method statement — a document setting out how high-risk construction work will be done safely.
Tag out: attaching a warning tag to faulty equipment and removing it from service so no one uses it before repair.
NCC: National Construction Code — the code that construction work in Australia must comply with.
Australian Standards: the technical standards that materials, tools and workmanship are measured against.
Bevel (primary): the main ground angle on a chisel or plane blade, around 25°.
Hone: refining the cutting edge on a fine stone, usually at a slightly steeper angle (around 30°) than the ground bevel.
Burr: the thin wire of steel raised on the back of an edge during sharpening — removed by flattening the back on the stone.
Kickback: a saw or router grabbing the work and throwing it — or itself — back at you; prevented by sharp blades, secured work and correct feed direction.
Pneumatic: powered by compressed air from a compressor via hoses — nail guns are the classic example.
Services: the power, water, gas and communications running through a site — located before any cutting or drilling starts.
