Install lining, panelling and moulding

This unit covers fixing lining boards, sheet panelling and profiled timber mouldings — architraves, skirtings, scotias, pelmets and raking moulds — to walls, ceilings and openings so the finished surfaces sit plumb, level and in plane. It's second-fix carpentry: the work everyone sees, so joints must be tight, margins even, and set-outs balanced.

What this unit is about

You'll plan and carry out the installation of lining boards, sheet panelling and profiled mouldings — from reading the drawings and setting out a balanced wall, through cutting and fixing, to tight mitred and scribed joints on architraves, skirtings, scotias, pelmets and raking moulds. It matters because this is finish work: an out-of-plumb board or a gappy mitre is visible to the client forever, and rework at this stage is expensive.

Prerequisite & context This unit sits in the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package and has CPCCWHS2001 (basic WHS in construction) as a prerequisite. All work sits under WHS law, the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant Australian Standards, manufacturers' specifications and your workplace's own procedures.

Element 1

Plan and prepare

Read the job first. Interpret the work instructions, drawings and specifications, then plan the sequence — what gets lined first, where mouldings follow, what has to be finished before you start.
Plan for compliance. Every step must line up with laws and regulations, the NCC, Australian Standards, WHS and environmental requirements, manufacturers' specifications and your workplace's requirements. Manufacturers' specs set fixing types, fastener centres, adhesives and clearances — they aren't optional.
Tools and equipment: select what the task needs, check everything for serviceability (sharp blades, working guards, undamaged leads, current test-and-tag) and report any faults — faulty gear gets tagged out, never used.
PPE for each stage: eye and hearing protection when cutting and nailing, respiratory protection when machining MDF or fibre cement, gloves for handling sheets. Match the PPE to the stage of the task, not one setup for the whole day.
Inspect the site: locate services (electrical cables and pipes hide behind wall frames — find them before you fix into them), assess hazards, and put risk controls in place including any required signage and barricades. Work to the SWMS where one applies.
Materials: select the right lining, panelling and moulding for the job, calculate quantities (allow for waste, offcuts and pattern matching), handle them safely — team lift long boards and full sheets — and stack, prepare and position them ready for use. Let timber acclimatise on site where required.

Element 2

Prepare the surface for lining and panelling

Choose the fixing procedure to suit the lining material and the substrate: nails or brads (including secret nailing through tongues), screws, adhesive, or a combination — always to the manufacturer's specification.
Get the frame true before anything goes on it. Check the studs or battens with a straightedge or string line: trim high members to line, pack or wedge low ones, fix battens where needed, and add extra noggings wherever sheet edges or board ends need support. The lining copies whatever is behind it.
Set out for balance. Measure the wall and set out the boards or sheets so the effect is balanced across both the width and the height — equal cut pieces at each end, no sliver board jammed against a corner or an opening. Set out first, fix second.

Element 3

Install the lining and panelling

Mark and cut from the set-out. Mark each board or sheet, cut to length and shape — scribe around openings, penetrations and services — then fit and position it dry before fixing.
Secure and fix progressively. Secret-nail tongue-and-groove boards through the tongue; fix sheets at the manufacturer's fastener centres; use adhesive plus mechanical fixings where the spec calls for it.
Plumb, level and in plane — and keep checking. Get the first board dead plumb (or dead level for horizontal boards), re-check every few boards, and check the face for a uniform plane with no steps or ripples. Small errors compound across a wall; correct them early, in small increments.
The benchmark job: for assessment you line a continuous wall of at least 3.0 m × 2.4 m including one opening — once in lining boards and once in sheet panelling.

Element 4

Cut and fix profiled architraves and mouldings

Architraves: gauge an even margin (the quirk — typically 5–6 mm) back from the jamb edge all the way around, mark the head and legs, cut to length, position and fit. Consistent margins are what make a door or window look right.
Skirtings: measure each wall, mark, cut to length, position and fit tight to the floor line and the wall.
Mitre joints (architrave heads, external skirting corners): mark, cut at half the joint angle — 45° for a square corner — and fit flush to face and true, with no gaps.
Scribed joints (internal corners on profiled skirting, scotia and quad): run the first piece square into the corner; cut the second to the shape of the profile — usually with a coping saw off a 45° mitre cut — so it sits over the first. Scribes stay tight when the timber shrinks; internal mitres open up.
Scotia return ends: where a moulding stops mid-wall, cut the return end to the profile shape and correct length so it finishes back to the wall cleanly rather than showing raw end grain.
Pelmet mouldings: mark to length, cut, assemble and fix the pelmet with mitres true and gap-free — pelmets are at eye level, so joints are on full display.
Raked mouldings (running at a slope — raking ceilings, stairs, gable trims): set out each position and shape the mould to the pattern for each position. A mitre between a raked mould and a level mould is not a standard 45° cut — the profile has to be developed to suit the rake.

Rule of thumb External corners get mitred. Internal corners get scribed. And any joint on show must be flush to face, true, and tight — "close enough" is a callback.

Element 5

Clean up

Clean up to the rules: meet all legislative and workplace requirements for safety, waste disposal and materials handling — control and clean up dust, separate waste streams, recycle or dispose of offcuts correctly, and return reusable materials to storage.
Look after the gear: check, clean, maintain and store tools and equipment properly, and report (and tag out) any faults you find so the next person doesn't pick up a damaged tool.

Preparing surfaces for lining

Fixing battens to a surface to create a true fixing plane.
Trimming frame members to line where they sit proud.
Fixing additional noggings to support sheet edges and board ends.
Packing and wedging frame members that sit low, to bring the face to a uniform plane.

Moulding profiles you must recognise

Beading — flat beads, quad, cover strips and nosings.
Bull nosed, splayed and square profiles.
Scotia (concave profile) and multi-curved profiles.
Ornate period profiles — colonial and heritage mouldings.

Junctions, angles and rakes

Mouldings join at surface intersections — including changes of level and mouldings running at a slope or rake.
Surface junctions may be at right angles, obtuse or acute angles — the mitre is always half the joint angle, whatever the corner.
Lining boards may run vertical, horizontal or raked.
Edging covers architraves, skirtings, raking moulds and the joints between them.

Common errors

Where people slip up

Mitring internal corners on profiled skirting. Fix: internal corners get scribed — first piece square into the corner, second piece coped to the profile. Internal mitres open into a visible gap as the timber shrinks; a scribe stays tight.

Starting boards from one end without a set-out. Fix: measure the wall and balance the set-out to width and height first, so the cut boards at each end are even. Working blind from one corner leaves a sliver board on show at the other.

Lining straight over a frame that's out of plane. Fix: string-line and straightedge the frame first, then trim, pack or wedge members to line and add noggings. Lining faithfully reproduces every bow behind it — you can't fix the frame after the sheets are on.

Eyeballing architrave margins. Fix: gauge the quirk margin (typically 5–6 mm) and mark it right around the jamb before cutting or fixing anything. A margin that wanders is the first thing a client's eye catches.

Cutting a raked-mould joint as a standard 45° mitre. Fix: where a moulding runs at a rake, set out each position and shape the mould to the pattern for that position. The profile of a raked mould meeting a level mould must be developed — a flat 45° leaves a mismatched, gappy joint.

Architrave: The profiled moulding fixed around a door or window opening to cover the joint between the jamb and the wall lining.
Batten: A timber strip fixed to a wall or ceiling to create a straight, true surface to fix lining onto.
Margin (quirk): The small, even set-back (typically 5–6 mm) between the edge of a jamb and the architrave, marked with a gauge before fixing.

Raking mould: A moulding running at a slope (e.g. up a raking ceiling or stair). Its profile must be set out and shaped to pattern for each position.
Return (scotia return): A short profiled end piece that finishes a moulding back to the wall where it stops, instead of showing end grain.
Secret nailing: Nailing tongue-and-groove boards through the tongue at an angle so the next board hides the fixing.
Set-out: The measured plan of board or sheet positions across a surface, balanced to width and height before fixing starts.
Uniform plane: A finished surface that is flat and consistent — plumb, level, with no steps, ripples or bows between boards or sheets.
