Overview

What this unit is about

This unit is about taking accurate measurements with rulers, tapes and digital devices, and using basic maths — weight, area, volume, perimeter, circumference, ratio and percentage — to work out quantities of materials on a construction job. Getting it right means concrete, timber, tiles and paint arrive in the right amounts; getting it wrong costs money, wastes material and holds up the whole crew.

Obtaining measurements

Pick the right tool and method

Match the equipment to the job: a steel rule for short, fine work and marking out; a retractable tape for rooms, frames and most site runs; a long fibreglass tape for set-outs; a laser distance measurer for long spans or when you're measuring on your own; a calculator or app for the number-crunching.
Choose the method before you measure: work from a solid reference point (a datum), keep the tape straight, level and taut, and decide whether you need an inside or outside measurement.
Measure twice, cut once — take the measurement, take it again, and only then mark or record it.

Reading to the nearest millimetre

Hook the tape end firmly on the edge, or butt it flat against the surface — a slack or angled tape reads long.
The metal hook on a tape is meant to slide by its own thickness, so the zero is true whether you hook over an edge or push against a face. Don't "fix" it.
Keep the blade flat against the work and read straight-on at eye level — reading at an angle (parallax error) can shift your reading by a millimetre or more.
Read down to the smallest graduation — 1 mm — and record the number with its unit straight away.
Check your gear before you use it: a bent hook, kinked blade or worn markings will quietly ruin every measurement you take.

Every small graduation is 1 mm; the tall numbered lines are every 10 mm. Read straight-on, at eye level, and record the exact millimetre.

Performing basic calculations

The seven calculations you must be able to do

Perimeter — the distance around the outside: add all the sides. Rectangle: P = 2 × (L + W). Used for skirting, fencing and edge formwork.
Circumference — the perimeter of a circle: C = π × d (or 2 × π × r). Used for wrapping pipes or banding round tanks.
Area — the surface covered: rectangle A = L × W. Used for paint, tiles, sheet flooring and turf.
Volume — the space filled: V = area of base × height. Used for concrete, sand, soil and excavation.
Weight (mass) — mass = volume × density, with density in kg/m³. Used for deliveries, load limits and planning manual handling.
Ratio — parts of a whole mix: a 4:1 sand-to-cement mix has 5 parts in total, so a 100 kg batch needs 80 kg of sand and 20 kg of cement.
Percentage — a fraction of 100: to add a 10% cutting allowance, multiply by 1.10. So 32 m² of sheeting becomes 32 × 1.10 = 35.2 m².

Worked example — a concrete slab. Priya is ordering concrete for a slab 3 m long, 4 m wide and 100 mm thick. First convert: 100 mm = 0.1 m. Volume = 3 × 4 × 0.1 = 1.2 m³. At roughly 2400 kg per cubic metre, that slab weighs about 1.2 × 2400 = 2880 kg — nearly three tonnes.

Metres → millimetres: multiply by 1000 (move the decimal point three places right). 3.6 m = 3600 mm.
Millimetres → metres: divide by 1000 (move the decimal point three places left). 450 mm = 0.45 m.
Sense-check: answers in millimetres should be big numbers, answers in metres should be small numbers. If it went the other way, you converted in the wrong direction.

Check it, then write it down

Estimate first with round numbers so you know roughly what the answer should be — then a keying error stands out immediately.
Check the calculation a second way: redo it, reverse it, or have a workmate run it independently.
Carry the units through every line of working — m, m², m³, kg — so unit mistakes can't hide.
Record your workings and results — on the plan, order sheet or site diary, with units and the date — so anyone can check them and you can reuse them.

Ordering short stops the job; ordering long wastes money and creates handling and disposal work. Checked, recorded calculations protect both.

Use π ≈ 3.14 for site work, and remember: any straight-sided solid (a prism) is just base area × height — that's how the cube and cylinder volumes work too.

Watch-outs

Where people slip up

Mixing units in one calculation.

A 2.4 m board × 600 mm width is not "2.4 × 600 = 1440". Convert everything to one unit first: 2.4 m × 0.6 m = 1.44 m².

Using the diameter where the formula wants the radius.

The radius is half the diameter. For a 600 mm pipe, r = 0.3 m — halve it before you square it in π × r².

Converting in the wrong direction.

Metres to millimetres must make the number bigger (× 1000); millimetres to metres must make it smaller (÷ 1000). If 450 mm came out as 450 000 m, you went the wrong way.

Reading the tape on an angle, or with a slack blade.

Keep the blade taut, flat and square, and read straight-on at eye level — that's how you hit 1 mm accuracy every time.

Doing it in your head and not writing anything down.

Estimate first, calculate, check it a second way, then record the workings and the result with units. Unrecorded numbers can't be checked — and get "remembered" wrong.
